Welcome to Thula
Thula is a neighbourhood school in Amsterdam-Oost, in the Indische buurt near the Flevopark. At Thula, children learn with head, heart and hands, on the solid foundation of Waldorf (Steiner) education. Singing, reading, clapping, doing maths, playing, writing, moving, listening, storytelling, discovering: our days at school are richly filled.
Everyone is welcome at Thula. We love to see the richness of cultures that characterises Amsterdam-Oost reflected in our school. We pay attention to traditions and cultures from all over the world. As a school, we work on building strong roots in the neighbourhood, with our eyes on the world.
Come and visit for a morning
During the information morning, our head of school, Jasper Postema, will talk about our education and there will be time for your questions. This will be followed by a tour of the school while all the lessons are in progress. This offers a wonderful insight into our teaching.
The next information morning is on Thursday, 14 January 2027. All dates and practical information can be found under 'Starting at Thula'.
Where does the name Thula come from?
Thula is an imaginary tree with strong roots and branches bearing lush, colourful blossoms. The tree symbolises security and life. The roots represent being firmly grounded and a place within the neighbourhood.
Thula wants to offer space for the diverse cultures that make Amsterdam-Oost so rich. The blossoms symbolise personal development and community development. At the same time, the tree reminds us of the strength and wisdom that nature offers us. In Zulu and Xhosa, two South African languages, thula means 'silence', 'calm' and 'peace', known from the lullaby Thula Baba. The name also recalls Tula, the freedom fighter who led the Curaçao slave revolt in 1795.
Thula is a cheerful-sounding name that offers a sense of security and also sparks curiosity. It reflects everything the school aims to be: a place with strong roots in a diverse neighbourhood. We form a community where children, teachers and parents come together in the spirit of diversity, while respecting everyone's identity.
