Information morning
Are you interested in our school, would you like more information, and are you curious to experience the atmosphere? Then you are warmly welcome at one of our information mornings. There you will get a glimpse into our education, a tour of the school, and there will be room for you to ask your questions.
This school year, there are information mornings on:
- Thursday, 8 October 2026
- Thursday, 14 January 2027
- Thursday, 4 March 2027
- Thursday, 13 May 2027
Good to know:
- You can walk in from 8:45 am. The session starts at 9 am and lasts until approximately 10 am.
- You can join on the morning itself. There is no option to register in advance.
- The information mornings are for parents/caregivers and are not suitable for bringing young children along.
- The information mornings are held in Dutch. If that is a challenge, feel free to ask another parent to help you translate.
- Dates are subject to change, so please check the website before you come.
You are very welcome!
Registering 4-year-olds
Thula is part of Amsterdam's central admissions policy. We are a neighbourhood school, so parents living within a radius of 2 kilometres of the school are given priority for placement.
Around the age of 3, you can register your child for a primary school. More information about the admissions policy and the registration procedure can be found on the website of BBO-Amsterdam.
Once your child has been placed at our school through the lottery, our head of school, Jasper Postema, will invite you well before the fourth birthday for a biographical conversation. We find it important to know how the development in the first years has gone and to get to know you. This helps us respond better to what your child needs and to be attentive to their home culture. Children start after their fourth birthday. Before that, they and you are invited by the kindergarten teacher to get acquainted after school hours and to have a look in the classroom.
Transferring from another school
Does your child already attend school and are you considering switching to Thula? We call this zij-instroom (transfer). According to Amsterdam regulations, entry in principle always takes place after the summer holiday. Exceptions are possible only in the case of a house move, or when your child's current school also considers it in the child's best interest to switch at a different time. For transfers, we give priority to children from other Waldorf (Steiner) schools and children with brothers or sisters at our school.
Let our school office know by email that you would like to explore the transfer process: administratie@vrijeschoolthula.nl. Include the name and date of birth of your child, the reason for switching, the desired class, your child's current school, and your phone number. Please note: our class names differ from those of regular primary schools. Group 3 is Class 1 with us, group 4 is Class 2 and group 8 is Class 6.
If there is space in the relevant class, we can process the request. In our school guide you can read step by step how the procedure works. We also explain this during the information morning.
What does your child need at our school?
Kindergarten children at Thula play outside a lot, in all weather. It is very important to dress kindergarten children appropriately for the weather. Ideally, dress them in a few extra layers that can be taken off if needed. In case of rain, a good rain suit is needed, since they play outside for an hour even then. At the start, it is nice if rain boots, labelled with their name, are brought to school and left there. For children who sometimes go to the toilet too late, it helps to always have spare clothes in their bag. We find it important that children drink enough and eat nutritious food. Kindergarten children bring fruit, which may or may not be shared in the classroom. Tea is made in the classroom. Kindergarten children do not wear their shoes in the classroom. They wear special eurythmy shoes, which they receive from the school.
From Class 1 onwards, children bring a large water bottle in their backpack, as well as a nutritious lunch. There are two eating breaks. Think of a container with fruit and vegetables and a container with bread. Here too, we ask that no pre-packaged food and drinks be given. On Fridays, the children have a gym lesson. They bring a gym bag with gym shoes, shorts and a t-shirt.
Voluntary parent contribution
The parent contribution is a voluntary contribution; education in the Netherlands is, after all, free. We emphasise this voluntary nature because all children have the right to the education they need, regardless of their parents' financial resources. Children are never excluded from the extras that the parent contribution makes possible.
At Thula, the parent contribution takes the form of a donation via the Parent Foundation (Ouderstichting). The contributions make arts and crafts subjects possible, and in addition, annual festivals and cultural outings are organised for all our pupils. The board of the Parent Foundation ensures that the money is spent properly; the contribution is not used for items that are financed from the regular government funding.
Would you like to know more about supporting Waldorf (Steiner) education at our school? Then please contact the school management or the Parent Foundation via info@thulastichting.nl.
After-school care
Thula works together with childcare organisation Kinderrijk. The care takes place within the school. In addition to the classrooms, there are spaces set up in a homely atmosphere that fit with the vision and character of our school. This way, children remain in their familiar surroundings after school. The youngest children are cared for on the ground floor, and older children on the first floor. For them, there is also the handicrafts room to work on small projects. Of course, children meet each other while playing outside. Through careful collaboration between Thula and Kinderrijk, there is a coordinated structure to the day.
More information can be found on the website of Kinderrijk.
